The tragic and devastating events of the past week have impacted property owners and renters due to displacement by fire and loss of properties and their housing. Our hearts go out to all who have been impacted by the devastating wildfires in the Los Angeles Area.
If you have short-term or long-term housing available for rent, please let us at the Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles know so we may help place those who are now in need of housing. Insurance
Possible reimbursement for evacuation expenses plus tips for documentation from California’s Insurance Commissioner, click here. Be sure to conduct an Insurance Checkup to know what your policy covers. State law REQUIRES a mandatory, one-year moratorium on insurance companies canceling or non-renewing residential insurance policies in certain areas within or adjacent to a fire perimeter after a declared state of emergency.
Power Service
For residents serviced by Southern California Edison (SCE), the Public Safety Power Shutoff Events webpage offers information on how weather conditions of relatively low humidity and strong winds, in combination with dry fuels, can threaten power supply. It also includes a link to the SCE power outage map.

Rental Housing and Supplier Restrictions on Price Gouging During Disasters
California law limits pricing of essential goods and services, including rental housing, repairs / construction supplies and services during an officially declared emergency. Link to the law here. Governor Newsom signed an Executive Order on January 12th that extends these restrictions until January 7, 2026. Link to the Executive Order here. Price gouging is illegal during a state of emergency. Suspected price gouging should be reported to local authorities or the Attorney General at oag.ca.gov/report.

RentSpree is refunding screening fees to provide relief for those impacted by the devastating wildfires currently affecting Los Angeles County, RentSpree will refund application fees for individuals who need to rent property due to displacement and/or property damage caused by the fires.
Here’s how it works:
- Property owners should generate and share the application link with applicants through RentSpree at https://www.rentspree.com/partner/aagla.
- Once the applicant applies and pays the screening fee, applicants should contact RentSpree at support@rentspree.com, and RentSpree will promptly refund their screening fee.
