Attention Downey Owners: Downey City Council to Consider Approving Annual Rate Increases for Solid W

Industry News,

On Tuesday, March 10th, the Downey City Council will consider adoption of a resolution to approve annual rate adjustments for solid waste and recycling services applicable to both residential and commercial customers (Agenda Item 8). If approved by the Council, the rate increases will be effective April 1, 2020.

The proposed rate increases under consideration are:

  • Single-family Residential Customers – 12.3% rate increase
  • Multi-family Residential Customers (up to four units) – 6.06% rate increase for individual cart service and 5.67% rate increase for 3 cubic yard (CY) bin service
  • Commercial Customers (including multi-family residential customers with five or more units) – 5.43% rate increase for individual cart service and 5.5% rate increase for 3 cubic yard (CY) bin service

Following the passage of Assembly Bill 1482, the new statewide rent control and renter protection law effective since January 1, 2020, annual rent increases are now “capped.” As a result of the rent cap coupled with ever increasing building operating costs, you may not be able to completely offset the proposed increases.

If you would be impacted by the rate increases, we encourage you to reach out to the City Council and attend the meeting. Let the Council know that you oppose the increases under consideration.
