VICTORY ALERT: WE WON -- TWICE! We Defeated Rent Stabilization AND City-Paid Attorneys for Renters

Local News Alerts,

On June 7th the San Bernardino City Council considered rent stabilization (a/k/a, rent control) and the possibility of City-paid private attorneys to represent renters (Legal Aid Tenant Protection Pilot Program) in San Bernardino. On a vote of 3-2 with 1 council member leaving before the vote, both proposals were defeated. Thank you to Council Members Theodore Sanchez (who made the motion to reject both proposals), Fred Shorett and Juan Figueroa for Voting NO on these extremely expensive and harmful proposed polices that would have further worsened the shortage of affordable rental housing in San Bernardino.

AAGLA zealously advocated to defeat these two extremely bad policy recommendations. We reached out to City Council members in advance of the meeting, sent a Red Alert to AAGLA members in the City of San Bernardino, called our members to encourage them to attend the meeting in-person or via Zoom, wrote a detailed and comprehensive comment letter with data showing these ordinances would do far more harm to rental housing in San Bernardino than good, and provided public comments during the meeting urging rejection of both proposals.

Thank you to our members that took the time to email or call the City Council Members in advance of the meeting and who attended the meeting in-person or via Zoom. Your Voices Make a Difference and helped us achieve this DOUBLE WIN for all rental housing providers in San Bernardino!

Help us keep up the momentum and pressure going on local government to recognize rental housing providers as part of the solution to housing for those residents unable to purchase for-sale properties.  This was a very close vote of 3-2 and we still need to educate Council Members Kimberly Calvin and Ben Reynoso -- who voted in favor of both proposals -- as to the devastating harms these policies would have caused to independent, mom-and-pop owners in their community and to the supply of naturally occurring affordable rental housing. We will continue to track issues in San Bernardo, advocate for our members interests and keep our members fully informed of local government activities in the City and throughout San Bernardino County.
