RED ALERT: SUPPORT OUR PROPOSED BILL TO END SQUATTING
SB 448 empowers local law enforcement to take immediate action when property owners provide a sworn affidavit confirming unlawful entry at a property. The proposed bill also creates penalties for trespassers who falsify claims, protects lawful tenants and occupants, and shields disaster victims from losing their homes to squatters.
A summary of the proposed SB 448 is HERE.
We ask you to help us pass our anti-squatter legislation, SB 448. TODAY! Please call each of the legislators on the Senate Public Safety Committee before the April 8th hearing and urge them to VOTE YES on SB 448! Please let the Members of the Committee know you are “calling in regard to Senate Bill 448 to be heard by the Senate Public Safety Committee on April 8th” and:
- As a property owner and housing provider, you are concerned about the growing issue of illegal trespassing and squatting impacting your community.
- Existing California laws make removing illegal trespassers a lengthy and costly process. States like New York, Pennsylvania, and Georgia already have passed new laws to address illegal trespassing and squatters, and it would benefit California to do the same.
- “I respectfully request your SUPPORT of Senate Bill 448 to protect victims of disasters, housing providers, and renters by implementing a balanced common-sense solution to trespassing that:
- Provides law enforcement with the necessary tools to remove trespassers.
- Provides reasonable remedies for homeowners and housing providers to reclaim their property without lengthy and costly legal proceedings that further strain our court system.
- Safeguards lawful renters from wrongful evictions.
- Ensures the availability of quality affordable housing for lawful renters.
