Oxnard Discusses Local Rent Control
On September 14, the Community Services, Public Safety, Housing and Development Committee met and discussed rent control and other tenant protections. There are 3 committee members, namely Mayor John Zaragoza, Mayor Pro Tem and Committee Chair Bryan MacDonald, and City Councilmember Oscar Madrigal. Mayor Zaragoza made a recommendation to establish a local rent control ordinance for an initial term of 12 months capping rental rates at CPI. Councilmember Madrigal agreed and stated that local rent control should exist even longer than 12 months without specifying any end date. Direction was given to staff that a study session should be held with the entire City Council regarding rent control. No date was given as to when the City Council would hear this issue.
AAGLA strongly opposes rent control and submitted a letter in advance of the committee meeting as well as spoke during public comment against local rent control. We will continue to advocate against the Mayor’s rent control proposal and provide our members with updates as the discussion progresses.
