Rental Housing Providers Are Finally Heard!

At the September 13th Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors meeting, the Board approved a motion advanced by Supervisor Barger, by a vote of 3-2, with Supervisors Solis and Kuehl opposing, directing County Departments to immediately initiate a coordinated communications strategy to inform residents throughout the County in both the unincorporated areas and incorporated cities of the December 31, 2022 end date to the Countywide eviction moratorium (applicable to unincorporated areas and incorporated cities) and rent increase freeze which applies to rent stabilized units in the unincorporated areas only.

SUPERVISOR BARGER MOTION

Both Supervisor Barger and Chair Mitchell provided the rationale for the motion highlighting the vital importance of proactively instituting robust education and outreach to the community regarding the December 31, 2022 expiration of the County moratoriums, and available County resources, so that renters and rental housing providers are informed and prepared. Chair Mitchell reiterated the importance of vulnerable members of the community being aware of the County actions nine months ago in January 2022 and the impact it will have at the end of December.

The approval of the motion marks a significant acknowledgment of the clear end of the moratoriums and the Board’s objective to facilitate the formal phase out plan over the remaining months of the year.

It is important to note that during the Supervisor’s deliberations, Supervisor Kuehl indicated that a motion may be put forward to impose long term housing regulations prior to the end of the moratorium. We will continue to monitor these issues closely, strongly advocate for our member’s interests, and provide updates.
