Hermosa Beach City Council Takes No Action to Adopt a New Residential Eviction Moratorium
The Concerns of Rental Housing Providers are Heard!
This Tuesday, June 8th, the Hermosa Beach City Council considered and decided against moving forward with the adoption of a new residential eviction moratorium. Due to our advocacy efforts and the efforts of our local Hermosa Beach members, the City Council recognized the current dynamics as the State and businesses are scheduled to fully reopen in a matter of days, and that individuals are working, will return to work or will have new employment opportunities. Moreover, that the conditions that precipitated the establishment of a temporary residential eviction moratorium had changed and that current conditions do not warrant adoption of a new moratorium.
The City Council directed that the City focus its attention on the aggressive promotion of the State’s rental assistance program through various means such as on the City’s website and other local media. The Council also approved the extension of the requirement that housing providers obtain building permits prior to issuing a tenancy termination to demolish or substantially remodel their property. It is important to note that currently under State Law, Senate Bill 91, housing providers are precluded from issuing no-fault tenancy terminations for substantial remodels through June 30, 2021, unless necessary to comply with health and safety requirements.
