Hermosa Beach City Council Postpones Ordinance Requiring Owners to Assume Sidewalk Area Liabilities

Industry News,

At the July 28, 2021 Hermosa Beach City Council meeting, the City Council postponed hearing the new proposed ordinance to make all property owners fully financially and legally liable for sidewalks, parkways, parking strips (area between sidewalk and curb), gutters and curbs (collectively referred to as the “Sidewalk Area”) that abut their private property. This delay is a win for housing providers and other property owners in Hermosa Beach as it will allow AAGLA time to further engage with the City about its concerns regarding this ordinance and explore alternatives to it. AAGLA sent a letter opposing the ordinance to the City Council and a Red Alert to our members in Hermosa Beach.

Thank you to all our members that took the time to make their voices heard in opposition to this ordinance by calling in during the City Council meeting, posting comments on the City’s website and writing emails to the City Councilmembers. It is our collective voice that made this delay possible! The next step for this issue is that it will be heard by the Public Works Commission, which is likely to happen at its September 15 meeting. After it is heard by the Commission, then it will return to the City Council for further consideration. We anticipate that the City Council will reconsider this issue at its September 28 meeting. AAGLA has already begun further outreach to the City to begin discussions and will keep our members informed.
