Do You Believe Squatters Are a Problem in California?

Squatters are a significant issue in California and across the United States, as unauthorized individuals occupy properties without the owner’s consent. Squatters can cause substantial property damage, including graffiti, theft, and destruction of materials, and they may even pose a risk of physical injury to property owners.

States like New York, Florida, Alabama, and Georgia have recently taken action by passing anti-squatter legislation or introducing pending bills. These laws protect property owners by ensuring local law enforcement can swiftly remove unauthorized occupants from their properties.

In California, our Association, along with affiliated apartment associations statewide, is working on legislation to defend property owners' rights when faced with squatters. This legislation will provide property owners with quick action from local law enforcement to remove unauthorized occupants.

With your support, we hope to pass this legislation in the 2025 legislative session. We need your help! Please take a moment to complete this short survey.
