DishTV Tenants Advocate Push for National Rent Control During Protest at HUD’s Washington, D.C. Head
Nearly 100 tenant advocates protested outside of the headquarters of the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) last month advocating for national rent control and tenant protections. The tenant groups, which were organized by Alliance for Housing Justice, announced a platform of measures that include national rent control, stricter regulations on private equity apartment owners and the creation of 12 million publicly funded affordable housing units.
The tenant advocates also called for reparations for past housing and land policies that have harmed minority communities and are pushing for more environmental regulations to make sure housing is safe and sustainable, and want new leadership at HUD, in Congress and in the White House.
The group of tenant advocates were heard chanting phrases such as “No housing, no peace” and “We ain’t gonna move.” Additionally, protesters heard several speeches and a small group of protestors entered HUD’s office building to try to present its proposal to the federal agency. However, the advocates were apparently denied a meeting with HUD officials, including a requested meeting with HUD Secretary, Dr. Ben Carson.
