Ballot and Other Statewide Initiatives Update (As of April 8, 2026)
Ballot and Other Statewide Initiatives Update (As of April 8, 2026)
The following is an update on certain statewide initiatives that are being supported by the Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles.
Local Taxpayer Protection Act (“Save Proposition 13”).
April was the final month for statewide initiatives to gather signatures for the November ballot – the deadline for signature submission is May 1, 2026. For the Local Taxpayer Protection Act to save Proposition 13, as of the date of this article, counties were continuing to complete random sampling of signatures submitted and at this time, there were thirty three out of fifty-eight counties that had completed random sample counts for a total of 258,986 signatures with a strong 76.9% validity rate (as a result, a 69% validity rate on the remaining signatures to be tested in the remaining twenty-five counties would qualify the Local Taxpayer Protection Axt for the ballot). The Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles strongly supports the Local Taxpayer Protection Act.
Wealth Tax.
The United Health Care Workers union (UHW) continues to work to obtain the necessary signatures needed by the May 1, 2026 deadline. UHW has increased their payments to statewide petition gatherers and are continuing to send every signal that they intend to qualify this tax for the November election. The Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles strongly opposes the Wealth Tax.
Californians Against Wasteful Spending and Higher Taxes.
The latest project to protect California taxpayers is the “Californians Against Wasteful Spending and Higher Taxes” being headed up by the California Business Roundtable (CBRT). An immediate launch of an aggressive advocacy effort is being planned that educates voters on:
- California’s waste, fraud, overspending, and high taxes
- The specific flaws within the billionaire tax initiative that allow legislators to expand the tax to every taxpayer without future voter approval.
CBRT has already developed advertising for multiple media channels based on extensive research to deliver educational messages to California voters. The Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles supports this initiative.
