AAGLA Joins the Coalition to Repeal the Death Tax
The Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles (AAGLA) recently joined the Coalition to Repeal the Death Tax.
Our organization supports the Repeal the Death Tax Act, an important ballot measure initiative proposed by the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association (HJTA), because parents should be able to transfer property to their children without triggering reassessment and a huge tax increase. Due to a change in the law, this is no longer the case. Now, countless family homes and businesses may have to be sold when transferred from parent to child because the new tax bill will be wildly unaffordable. The Repeal the Death Tax initiative will restore the parent-child exclusion from reassessment and protect family homes and businesses in California.
The Repeal the Death Tax Act is currently in the signature gathering phase, which is the most important phase of any ballot measure. We are calling on our members to support the Repeal the Death Tax Act by signing petitions and getting involved.

Background information:
In 2020, a lack of transparency led voters to pass Proposition 19, which has resulted in many families being forced to sell their homes and close small businesses. While it helped some homeowners move to a new home and keep their “Prop. 13” tax bill, it also contained a massive tax increase on property transferred from parents to children. With only limited exceptions, property transferred from parents to children is now reassessed to current market value when transferred.
The Repeal the Death Tax Act does not affect the protections for homeowners who move to a new home and keep their old tax bill. It simply removes the provisions of Proposition 19 that require reassessment of family-transferred properties. It will repeal the “death tax.” This will protect families that own homes, businesses, rental property or other real estate from the massive tax increases that result from sudden reassessment to market value.
We support this measure because we believe it aligns with the values of our organization and our members. The Repeal the Death Tax Act will protect California families and small businesses from being ravaged by outrageous property tax increases.
