AAGLA 2022 Litigation Update

Industry News,

During the past twelve months, we have made significant investment and progress in our litigation efforts.

  • In our Federal lawsuit against the City of Los Angeles seeking to overturn the City’s moratoriums on evictions and rent increases, we await the City of Los Angeles’ response that has been compelled by the U.S. Supreme Court, and following the response, we are hopeful that our matter will be heard.  When we succeed by a favorable ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court, it is our intention to seek compensatory damages against the City of Los Angeles and other jurisdictions that have imposed similar moratoriums.
  • We have just filed a new lawsuit against the County of Los Angeles in State Court seeking to overturn the moratorium on evictions, which the County has extended until June 2023.  Our arguments are focused on the “self-certification” aspect of the County’s moratorium, which we believe are well supported by existing case law.
  • We have 3 additional outstanding lawsuits, including one seeking to overturn the City of Los Angeles’ RecycLA trash hauling monopoly, and one each against the City of Los Angeles and City of Beverly Hills seeking to overturn rental registration requirements.
  • Finally, we have also been a major contributor to our statewide association, CalRHA’s case against the State of California, which seeks compensatory damages for the statewide eviction moratorium.

We sincerely hope you will consider continued support to the “cause” by making your voluntary, annual contributions to our PACs and Legal Fund, and consider contributing more throughout the year.  Your generosity is needed to help us win our ongoing fight for survival in this rental housing business.  PLEASE GIVE TODAY!
