A Message from the President of AAGLA

Posted By: Cheryl Turner, Esq. Industry News,

The June 2022 primary election is behind us. We are now headed for the November 2022 General Election.  I am sure we can all agree there were so many election results that were unexpected, especially in the City of Los Angeles’ local races.

Now that the results are in, on behalf of the Apartment Association of Greater Los Angeles, let me congratulate the successful candidates who were endorsed by us for successfully making it through the primary election as a majority winner or now as a runoff candidate this November.  Each of the candidates endorsed by our Association had participated in our intense interview and due diligence process and were then selected by a majority of those who participated on our interview committee.  And, for those candidates who did not qualify for the November runoff election, we acknowledge their courage, hard work and the effort made to participate as a candidate in the electoral process.  It is this very process of elections and the right of every citizen to vote that is one of the most important cornerstones of Democracy.

As far as election results go, I am very pleased to announce that I have qualified for the runoff election this November for State Senate, District 28.  As this next phase of the election cycle moves forward, I hope that all of you will continue to support me as well as the other candidates endorsed by our Association through your votes, campaign contributions and any other support that you can provide to all of us.

Throughout my State Senate campaign, many have asked me why I am running to be your next State Senator.  There are many reasons why I am seeking office at this time, but the most important reasons are:

  • To represent this district and the people who live in it in order to make it a better, safer, and healthier place to live;
  • To address the COVID crisis’ impact on jobs, housing, education, and the economy;
  • To work to establish truly universal healthcare for all;
  • To advocate for livable wages so that one fulltime job can pay for housing and other necessary living expenses;
  • To promote education because it is the foundation for future success;
  • To protect and preserve the environment for us all, and for future generations, since right now, planet earth is still our only home;
  • To promote housing production to address our homelessness crisis;
  • To advocate for public safety and criminal justice reforms;
  • To support small businesses, and find ways to retain businesses in the State of California to return our state back into a robust economy; and
  • To be accessible to the people of this community; represent them; create solutions for their pressing needs and to keep everyone informed.

I promise you that I will provide transparency; keep an open-door policy; meet regularly with members of the community and keep constituents well informed. My legal background provides me with the skills to propose, evaluate and advocate for regulations that will benefit not only those living in my district, but all Californians. My history of public service assures that I will be the lookout for the best interests of all Californians and not be swayed by special interest groups whose interests’ conflict with your needs. I will work tirelessly to create jobs and keep taxes to a minimum.  I will help to improve the economy and our environment by promoting the development of clean energy public infrastructure. I will work to increase affordable housing and support small businesses. I will address the after-effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on our education, health, and welfare. And, I will work tirelessly to accomplish what is best for our community.

We must ensure that those candidates who either have first-hand experience with rental housing or understand its many challenges and great importance to our society will also have a voice and a vote so that we can achieve a far more balanced approach when addressing rental housing affordability issues in the Legislature.  Rental housing owners need a strong advocate in Sacramento, and it is my sincere hope that I can have your trust and vote, and can soon be
