We Won! Claremont Rejects Rent Stabilization a.k.a. Rent Control
By Janet M. Gagnon, Esq.
Chief Corporate Affairs Officer & SVP, Government Affairs
On Tuesday, July 14th, the Claremont City Council voted unanimously to receive and file a report from city staff on rent stabilization (a/k/a, rent control) and take no further action on pursuing such a policy. During deliberations, the City Council recognized the extreme damage rent stabilization would cause to mom-and-pop owners providing naturally occurring affordable housing in Claremont.
This win was achieved due to the significant turnout of multifamily property owners and managers at the City Council meeting along with AAGLA’s continuous lobbying efforts in opposition, including submitting a formal, detailed opposition letter in advance of the meeting, attending the meeting in person to provide oral testimony and distributing our Red Alert to members calling them into action.
Local property owners and managers speaking live at City Council meetings is crucial to gaining support from the City Council. Without it, City Council members assume that rental housing providers do not care enough about the issue to turn out and so they are free to do whatever they wish. No Owners = Consent.
We thank our local members for showing up and speaking out! Defeating bad policies is a TEAM sport that requires property owners and managers ACTIVE PARTICIPATION to achieve.
We urge our Claremont members to stay alert for any future Red Alerts on other issues. We encourage all AAGLA members to attend City Council meetings in person, speak up, and make their voices heard. Your participation makes a significant impact and secures wins!
