Culver City Rejects ICE Eviction Moratorium and Rent Freeze

By Janet M. Gagnon, Esq.

Chief Corporate Affairs Officer & SVP Government Affairs

On September 29th, the Culver City Council decided to pursue a new emergency rental assistance program for those individuals directly impacted by ICE activities. An eviction moratorium and rent freeze were also on the table but due to our strong advocacy efforts, these two items received no support.

AAGLA has been strongly opposing the eviction moratorium and rent freeze since July when the Culver City Council originally took up these issues. Instead, AAGLA had suggested the creation of a rental assistance program (see attached AAGLA letter). Fortunately, the Culver City Council listened and is now taking steps to provide $50,000 in funding for rental assistance to individuals impacted by ICE activities.  This is intended as additional to the County’s new Emergency Rent Relief Program (ERRP) that will be providing funding countywide starting in December.

The new rental assistance program will be available only to adult residents of Culver City with a median household income at or below 80% area median income (AMI). Approved individuals would receive $1,000 per month for up to six months.

The program will be administered by a third-party and not the city itself.  We do not yet know when the fund will be open to receive applications. However, we will keep our members informed as additional information becomes available.

Please note that the fight is not over on an ICE eviction moratorium as the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will be considering it for the entire county on October 7th. Please see the related Red Alert for additional information.
