A motion proposed by Socialist L.A. County Supervisor, Lindsey Horvath, to allow renters a window of 3 months of past due rent before landlords could initiate eviction proceedings failed badly today. The motion brought forward by Horvath at today’s packed Supervisors’ meeting failed to garner a “second” and, accordingly, no vote was taken, and the proposal died. If passed, the rule would have applied countywide, both in unincorporated areas and incorporated cities within the county.
The other 4 County Supervisors heard loud and clear the opposition that came from property owners who both spoke in person at the meeting and inundated the email inboxes of County Supervisors and their staff members. This proves advocacy works.
AAGLA had worked on opposing this insane proposal for weeks by rallying our members to actively oppose the issue and meeting with numerous County officials.
Unfortunately, the 2-month past due rent before eviction proposal appears likely to pass, and will be limited to only unincorporated areas of the County, although other jurisdictions could possibly adopt a similar measure. The finalization of this proposal is forthcoming.
More updates on this issue will be provided soon.
