Editorial News Alert: Local Election Results and What’s Next?

On Friday, March 29th, the Los Angeles County registrar certified the results from the March 5th primary election.  During the primary election, many local races throughout Southern California took place for the offices of city council and county supervisor.  Some races have now been decided upon, but many more will result in run-offs that will be decided during the November general election cycle.

 

Decided Races

 

  • Los Angeles City Council

 

Winner CD-4: Nithya Raman (incumbent) and Democratic Socialists of America member received 50.67% of the vote – she won by less than 1% needed to avoid a run-off in November.  AAGLA endorsed Ethan Weaver, Los Angeles Deputy City Attorney, as being MUCH more business friendly. Council District 4 includes: Encino, Hollywood, Hollywood Hills, Los Felis, Silver Lake, Reseda, Sherman Oaks, Studio City and Van Nuys.

 

Councilmember Raman was endorsed by Democratic Socialists of America Los Angeles (DSA), ACCE Action (a.k.a. “Housing Justice League”), Our Revolution (calling Raman a progressive champion), Feel the Bern Democratic Club Los Angeles County, LA Forward (to advance bold, progressive policies), Mayor Karen Bass, City Council President Paul Krekorian, and fellow DSA City Council members Eunisses Hernandez and Hugo Soto-Martinez among others.  President Krekorian also is responsible for making Raman the Chair of the Housing and Homelessness Committee where she has repeatedly skipped hearing issues important to our members and instead went directly to the full City Council where she has two additional DSA City Council members, Eunisses Hernandez and Hugo Soto-Martinez, supporting her radical agenda.

 

Winner CD-6: Imelda Padilla (incumbent) received 78.35% of the vote and was endorsed by AAGLA. Council District 6, includes: Arleta, Lake Balboa, North Hollywood, North Hills, Panorama City, Van Nuys and Sun Valley.

 

Winner CD-8: Marqueece Harris-Dawson (incumbent) received 78.41% of the vote.  AAGLA did not endorse any candidates in this race. Council District 8 includes: Baldwin Hills, Hyde Park, King Estates, Vermont Knolls and West Park Terrace.

 

Winner CD-12: John Lee (incumbent) received 62.30% of the vote and was endorsed by AAGLA. Council District 12 includes: Chatsworth, Granada Hills, North Hills, Northridge, Porter Ranch and West Hills.

 

 

  • County of Los Angeles, Board of Supervisors

 

Winner District 2: Supervisor Holly Mitchell (incumbent) received 68.45% of the vote.  AAGLA did not endorse in this race. District 2 includes: Compton, Culver City, El Segundo, Fairfax/Park La Brea, Hermosa Beach, Inglewood, Manhattan Beach, Marina Del Rey and Redondo Beach.

 

Winner District 4: Supervisor Janice Hahn (incumbent) received 57.8% of the vote.  AAGLA endorsed candidate John Cruikshank who is the current Mayor of Rancho Palos Verdes as being more business friendly and received 14.1% of the vote. District 4 includes: Artesia, Bellflower, Cerritos, Downey, Lomita, Long Beach, Maywood, Norwalk, Paramount, Rancho Palos Verdes, San Pedro, Santa Fe Springs, Torrance and Whittier.

 

Winner District 5: Supervisor Kathyrn Barger (incumbent) received 56.8% of the vote and was endorsed by AAGLA. District 5 includes: Burbank, Duarte, Glendale, Glendora, La Crescenta, La Canada, Lancaster, Monrovia, North Hollywood, Palmdale, Pasadena, Santa Clarita, Sierra Madre, San Dimas, San Marino, Sunland and Tujunga.

 

 

  • Glendale City Council

 

Winner; Vartan Gharpetian received 16.56% of the vote and was endorsed by AAGLA.

 

Winner: Ardy Kassakhian (incumbent) received 22.92% of the vote.  AAGLA did not endorse in this race.

 

 

Races to be Decided on November 3rd

 

  • Los Angeles City Council

 

CD-14: Kevin DeLeon (incumbent) received 23.39% of the vote and will face challenger Ysabel Jurado who received 24.52% of the vote.  AAGLA endorsed Miguel Santiago who received 21.25% of the vote and did not make it into the November runoff.  Jurado is a tenants’ rights attorney and is endorsed by ACCE Action (a.k.a. Housing Justice League), California Progressive Alliance, Democratic Socialist of America Los Angeles, LA Forward, Feel the Bern Democratic Club Los Angeles County, Our Revolution (many of the same groups as supported Nithya Raman), Democratic Socialist of America City Council member Eunisses Hernandez and Burbank City Council member Konstantine Anthony. Council District 14, includes: Boyle Heights, downtown L.A., El Sereno, Lincoln Heights and Northeast L.A.

 

CD-10: Heather Hutt (previously appointed) received 37.78% will face challenger Grace Yoo, who received 23.11% of the vote and was endorsed by AAGLA.  Hutt is endorsed by Mayor Karen Bass, City Council President Paul Krekorian and all three Democratic Socialist of America City Council Members Nithya Raman, Eunisses Hernandez and Hugo Soto-Martinez among others. Council District 10 includes: Crenshaw, Koreatown, Leimert Park and Mid-City.

 

CD-2: Adrin Nazarian, who received 37.18% of the vote and was endorsed by AAGLA, will face off against Jillian Burgos who received 22.34% of the vote.  This is an open seat as President Paul Krekorian is termed out.  Burgos is a radical tenant activist affiliated with Feel the Bern Democratic Club Los Angeles County, Feel the Bern Democratic Club San Fernando Valley, LA Forward, and Our Revolution (several of the same organizations that supported Nithya Raman).  According to her X account (formerly Twitter), she has said “I believe in kindness, BLM, M4A and Housing for All” and “Housing is a human right.” Council District 2, includes: North Hollywood, Toluca Lake, Studio City, Sun Valley, Valley Glen, Valley Village and Van Nuys.  

 

 

  • Burbank City Council

 

Mayor Nick Schultz will be exiting the City Council as he received the most votes at 28.25% for the State Assembly, District 44 seat and will face off against Tony Rodriguez who received 25.67% of the votes for that race.  Schultz was endorsed by the California Democratic Renters Council and California Legislative Progressive among others.  Given his successful run for the state assembly seat run-off, his current seat on the City Council will likely be open.

 

Former Mayor Konstantine Anthony (a.k.a. “Mayor Spanky”) will be up for re-election to the City Council.  Anthony ran and lost with only 11.42% of the vote against L.A. County Supervisor Barger.  Anthony is a radical tenant activist and was endorsed by California Progressive Alliance, Feel the Bern Democratic Club Los Angeles County, Feel the Bern Democratic Club San Fernando Valley and LA Progressive among others.
