Up, Up and Away…Waste Hauling Fees in City of L.A. May Increase Again
The City of Los Angeles is proposing a significant increase to the Solid Resources Fee charged to property owners. If approved, this fee would rise by 54% starting this fall, with a total increase of 81.5% projected by July 2029. This proposed increase will affect all City of Los Angeles Sanitation customers citywide. The Solid Resources Fee increase would apply to those who reside in single-family or small multifamily properties whose solid waste is collected by the City. This fee, also called the “trash fee,” covers all costs related to the collection, transfer, recycling, and/or disposal of solid waste collected by the City of Los Angeles. This fee has not increased in 17 years.
The Multifamily Bulky Item Fee is charged to owners and tenants or residents of multifamily dwellings in the City of Los Angeles not subject to the City’s Solid Resources Fee. This fee has not increased in 18 years.
All customers regardless of income have the option to enroll in the “Level-Pay Program,” which allows individuals to pay their bill on a monthly instead of bimonthly basis. Also, residents would be impacted by only one of these increases, not both, depending on the type of dwelling in which they reside.
Bulky item collection services provided by the contracted trash haulers under RecycLA who service most multifamily dwellings have associated fees per collection and can be very costly, but the services provided by the City of Los Angeles Sanitation Department (LASAN) allow for unlimited bulky item collections at a small cost per month.
More information about the rates can be found at lacitysan.org/srfrates2025. In addition, the City of Los Angeles will be providing a couple of webinars to explain the new fees to customers. Registration for the webinars are at:
The First webinar | August 27, 2025 6:00 p.m. |
The Second webinar | September 13, 2025 10:00 a.m. |
A public hearing to discuss the proposed increases will be held on September 10, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Los Angeles City Hall, John Ferraro Council Chamber, Room 340, 200 North Spring Street, Los Angeles, California 90012. The rate adjustments are subject to Proposition 218, which requires two public hearings and further City Council approval.
