Turmoil in the L.A. County District Attorneys Office
Critics of George Gascón say the District Attorney's soft-on-crime approach has led to more crime and unsafe streets. Join us to learn more from someone on the inside about George Gascón's failed policies and what he and other Deputy D.A.s are doing to fix them and turn back the tide on crime.
As soon as he was sworn into office, District Attorney George Gascón began issuing directives to his prosecutors, instructing them to go soft on crime, coddle criminals, and trample upon the dignity and rights of crime victims. Critics say his progressive approach is emboldening people to commit crimes. Under his administration, prosecutors in the District Attorney's office are subjected to the following progressive policies:
- Prohibitions from requesting bail in most cases, including child abuse and domestic violence, regardless of criminal history.
- Repeat violent offenders are treated as first-time offenders, including murder, rape, robbery, kidnapping, and sex offenses. The policy is retroactive.
- Prosecutors are prohibited from filing sentencing enhancements such as great bodily injury, gang involvement, major narcotics trafficking, gun use, and if the offender is on probation or out on parole.
- No sentence of life without the possibility of parole may be given, regardless of the severity of the crime.
The Los Angeles County District Attorney's office no longer prosecutes these crimes:
- Trespassing
- Criminal threats
- Resisting arrest
- Disturbing the peace
- Driving without a license
- Driving on a suspended license
- Drug and paraphernalia possession
- Minor in possession of alcohol
- Drinking in public
- Under the influence of a controlled substance
- Public intoxication
- Loitering
- Loitering to commit prostitution
Join us to hear a perspective on the state of the L.A. County D.A.'s office and District Attorney Gascón from someone who is on the inside, Deputy District Attorney Eric Siddall. Eric has written extensively on California criminal justice issues and the failed policies of George Gascón. He has trained prosecutors and police officers through programs directed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, the Los Angeles Police Department, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, and the United States Department of Justice. He is the past Vice President of the Latino Prosecutors Association.
