ABOUT ANGELENO WINE COMPANY – WINE MAKING RETURNS TO LOS ANGELES
Angeleno Wine Company, located in a historic brick building across the road from Los Angeles State Historic Park, is one of only a handful of wineries to have opened in the City of Los Angeles since Prohibition, and it's a true L.A. enterprise. The winery, with its festive weekends-only tasting room, is run by business partners Amy Luftig and Jasper Dickson, who met and bonded over their shared love for winemaking at Silver Lake Wine. Dickson started making wine independently under the label Rhythm Wine, and the two eventually joined forces, founding Angeleno Wine Company in 2014.
Now, not only are the duo making wine in a building made from the recycled bricks of the first Los Angeles City Hall, they're even making wine using Los Angeles County-grown grapes. While Los Angeles may not be associated with wine these days, the city is actually the birthplace of the California wine industry. In its heyday in the late 1800s, Los Angeles wineries were making 25 million bottles of wine a year—until Prohibition brought it to a halt.
Most of the grapes the winery uses come from the Alonso Family Vineyard in Sierra Pelona Valley, where Galician and Spanish varietals thrive. The winery also sources from historic Lopez Vineyards in Rancho Cucamonga and Rock Farms Vineyard in Littlerock. The team personally harvests many of their grapes, allowing them to experiment with diverse varietals and winemaking techniques.
One standout project was the creation of Angelica, a historic sweet wine made from Mission San Gabriel grapes and aged at the winery—a nod to L.A.’s winemaking heritage. Their tasting room, open on weekends, offers a $20 flight of four wines and bottles for purchase. Favorites include the Gold Line (a skin contact moscato and tannat blend) and California Crackler (a Champagne-style chardonnay).
Their innovative spirit and commitment to local agriculture have made Angeleno Wine Company a destination for both L.A. locals and visitors. Guests are encouraged to bring their own food, making it a relaxed, community-driven space to explore L.A.’s wine legacy.
